this is kpix5 news on kbcw. >> counting down to the new year. tens of thousands will be gathering along san francisco's waterfront for the big celebration. >> we are two hours away from saying good-bye to 2013 and hello 2014. sharon chin live in san francisco in the middle of the celebration. sharon. >> reporter: a lot of people strolling down at this hour. in fact, several uniformed police officers on foot every few yards. car traffic starting to build up here. more than 200,000 people expected for the midnight fireworks. >> happy new year. >> crowds are staking out their spots for the annual free city sponsored fireworks display. people are ready to say good- bye to the best and worst of 2013. >> i moved to this country. i took up a job. >> i got layed off this year. >> moving to california

midnight fireworks and traffic delays expected until 1:00 a.m. live in san francisco, sharon chin, kpix5. >> what is it going to be like for all those folks outside celebrating? >> it's not going to be bad. chilly, but the skies perfectly clear. not a puff of fog. temperatures here in the city will be 46 degrees at midnight. it's 50 degrees now. elsewhere, it's chilly in the wine country, 32 degrees. 37 in santa rosa. these are the forecast temperatures for midnight. all in all, it looks like it should be pretty good party weather, at least when it comes to midnight weather in the city. have the complete forecast, which does look dry a few minutes from now. >> consider yourself warned. police are out in full force looking for drunk drivers. the bay bridge, a hot spot. if you're going to drink, be sure you have a sober designated driver or you can find another way home. get a cab.

muni, caltrans, are also offering free rides tonight. aaa is offering free tows. bart is not free, but trains will run until 3:00 a.m. we have all the information on kpix.com. >> happy new year. this was the scene just over an hour ago in times square. u.s. supreme justice led the countdown and pushed the big button to start the decent. a sea of people from all over the world packed in the midtown manhattan to see that crystal ball drop. many arrived 12 hours or more in advance to scope out their spot. >> not a great way to ring in the new year. a powerful strain of the flu suddenly making a comeback in california. betty tells us it is not too late to get vaccinated. >> the number of patients showing up at bay area hospitals, including this kaiser permanente in san jose with flu-like symptoms has jumped in the last week.

and most of them are suffering from the swine flu. the nasty virus known as h1n1 that caused a worldwide pandemic is making a comeback. the cdc says that same swine flu strain is making up the majority of cases nationwide. >> there's fear about it because of the attention it gathered in 2009. but that particular type of flu virus isn't anymore serious than the other types. >> this year's vaccine protects against the swine flu. doctors say it causes more illness in children, young adults, and healthy middle-aged people. the california department of public health says now is the time to get vaccinated. if you haven't already done so. the flu virus lives longer in cold weather and cases usually spike during the winter travel season. >> virus do travel from point a to point b very quickly. i would expect the cases of the flu to go up over the next month or so. >> in san jose, kpix5.

>> one person is dead after a car went into the water tonight. happened on highway 1 in marshall petaluma road at 5:30. witnesses say that the driver was being erratic and weaving across the double yellow line. the sheriff's department says the driver suffered minor injuries. however, a male passenger was trapped, had to be pulled out of the car. one child was killed, another injured along with an adult woman after they were hit by a car in san francisco. happened at polk and ellis streets. the driver is cooperating with police. no word on the injured child's condition, but the woman is said to be in critical condition. california is now investigating children's hospital oakland and handling of jahi mcmath. linda tells us the teen's family continues to search for a facility that will take her. >> every day i feel like a

little piece of me is being taken away. >> the young girl's mother grieves as she continues her fight with the hospital to release her child. or let another doctor come in to perform a tracheotomy and insert a feeding tube in her so they can move jahi out. >> it's like she's locked up in that tower. they won't help her, but they won't give us what we need to get her out. >> hospital insists the girl is brain dead and in a letter to the family's attorney today stressed its policy. children's hospital is unwilling to perform medical procedures such as a tracheotomy or installation of a gastric tube on jahi's body, nor can my client allow such procedures to be performed at children's hospital. a hospital spokesman said the family has this choice. >> you can take the body of jahi mcmath with the ventilator, transport her to another facility that would knowingly accept a dead body. >> jahi has been on a

ventilator since december 10. the family believes it is possible she can live. >> they are setting up roadblocks. because imagine this, if jahi does come back as we hope, imagine what children's is going to have to face. >> because i look at her and i feel like as her mother, i'm supposed to be able to help her and this hospital has my hands tied. >> it's a tragic story. this is a tragic story about a deceased person. not someone who is ever going to come back alive under any circumstances. >> the family uncysts uncysts they have several facilities and they have an ambulance and a plane standing by. in oakland, linda yee, kpix5. >> her uncle sent out this tweet asking for a physician to help the family. the procedure he is eluding to is to insert breathing and feeding tubes so she can be transferred. former first lady, barbra bush is in the hospital tonight in houston. she was admitted to methodist

our building a few days ago. you might remember seeing this video. a serial robber caught outside our building a few days ago. kpix5 learned more about that guy today. >> bail was set at $2 million and the arraignment for suspected bank robber was continued to thursday. so he did not appear in court today. but you may have already seen him on kpix5 television.

being chased by undercover in uniform police officers who caught up to him directly in front of the kpix television building. it was all captured on video. >> kpix was on this from the very beginning as was the san francisco police department officers on scene who made an arrest on scene. >> for a bank robbery suspect, trying to avoid identification and arrest, this was a bad place to end up. not only did the kpix surveillance camera record the end of the police foot chase, but two cameramen were on the spot. >> he is charged with nine felony counts. four counts of robbery for four independent robberies all committed at banks in the downtown area. >> investigator says the bank robber did not show a weapon. there was a note, actually a withdrawal slip with there are 100,000 written on it. the sergeant says bank robbers rarely get that kind of money. >> it varies anywhere from $500 to a few thousand dollars. high end, maybe $7,000. but in the end, ultimately,

it's not worth possible federal prosecution. >> a successful prosecution sends a message. >> i think it sends a clear message. when bail is set at $2 million. when someone is charged with nine felony counts and significant time behind bars, it sends a clear message, don't commit bank robbery. >> if the national security agency was using iphones as a surveillance device, apple said today it didn't know about it. sharon chin on the program that could reportedly give the government complete access to the popular smart phone that is owned by millions. >> imagine your iphone, a tool for the nsa. using a software program implanted in the phone, they can control it remotely to steal messages, harvest contact informs and secretly record audio. tech analyst, rob enderly. >> they placed an application

inside the iphone during its assembly and configuration and that program allowed them to access the phone. >> it did not cooperate with the nsa and had no idea the surveillance program existed, reportedly as far back as 2008. a cyber security researcher exposed the program in a german news magazine and the iphone is an easy target for nsa hackers because apple mountains consistency in its products. >> really don't change it very much. over time, that allowed an application to stay in place and function much longer than it would some place else. >> it would continue to defend its customers from hackers no matter who they are. shorn chin, kpix5. >> now tech experts say apple would have to devise a patch to prevent iphones from being used from surveillance. until then, there's nothing you can do. the disclosure also indicated the nsa used android phones, but the program reportedly worked better on iphones. taking a live look at the

bay bridge toll plaza this new year's eve. yikes, traffic is brutal getting into san francisco for the big fireworks celebration. fast track lanes in the middle of your screen are moving along. cars are stacked up at the pay gates. well it's a little early, but people will soon be gathering in san francisco. the big fireworks show begins at the stroke of midnight. it's getting in there. looks a bit tame compared to what it will be in an hour from now. right now, the finishing touches are going on the famous rose parade floats. this year's theme, dreams come true. >> a look at the work on some of those entries. >> after months of planning, prepping, and plotting, these masterful creations are getting ready to come to life. the floats claim the sweep stakes win the past three years going to dole. >> you look at this float ten times, you'll see ten different

times. it is so intricate and so detail. >> dole is a front runner with their float covered in tens and thousands of flowers. roses, orchids, and 1,000 gallons of water will recycle through three separate water falls. they have plenty of competition. sea world wanted to inspire a sense of wonder, bringing the under water world. >> there is seaweed being used on the killer whales to the sea turtle shell to onions, which are bubbles to represent bubbles coming up from the sea. >> the parade floats include plenty of new entries with an animal twist, include canine for cops and the lucy pet foundation, sure to be a crowd pleaser showcasing a collection of rescue dogs that do tricks and perform. this dog spent hours perfecting his double dutch hopscotch move. all of these floats followed

the same theme. dreams come true. and for many, as new year's day approaches, that theme is looking closer to a reality. >> there are millions of people that watch it and look for it every year. and it will be a part of that. >> louisa reporting, many of the floats are now moving into position. they have a six mile journey and then they will be in place, all of them, by midnight. >> there is a silver lining to all this dry weather. it is beautiful for watching a parade and for watching fireworks. >> absolutely. and the thing is, yes, we need the rain, but all the wishing isn't going to make it come, so we might as well have a good time. we have clear skies tonight. that's good news. temperatures on the balmy side right now in the city. 50 degrees. at least for this hour of the night. elsewhere, it's chilly. concord is down to 40 degrees. napa right now, it's down to 34. yikes. and here's what -- i want to revisit this. clear and chilly and the

midnight temperature in the city, about 46 degrees. clear skies bay wide. tomorrow looks sunny and unseasonally mild. most temperatures will arrange in the low 60s to the mid 70s inland. wind speeds, winds will not be much of an effect tonight in some calm locations, but it's not blowing 3 miles an hour. that's not too bad. air quality is not great. unhelpful levels of participates in the area. spare the air day not only tonight, but also tomorrow. and it's because high pressure over the coast, king tides again tomorrow which is the brand-new name for what we used to call high tides. tomorrow they get up to 7.1 feet. and then they dives to a real low tide at minus 1.6. here's what is going on. deep low pressure over the upper midwest means it's like a roller coaster. very deep low there. very high in tz eastern pacific and not much activity going on

with either of these two. they are simply parked in place and as a result, we are going to look for a continuation of more warm temperatures and no rain in sight. no rain this week, no rain next week, continued warm temperatures. for the bay area, we're going to be looking for the airport to look okay tomorrow, sunny skies, winds 15. and a high of 61 degrees and los angeles, 75. denver 39. we'll do it with snow tomorrow there and snow in chicago as well. new york is at 34. oakland tomorrow 66 degrees. we'll all be in the 60s with 67 at liver more and 65 santa rosa. the look ahead, numbers in the upper 60s this week inland and they will stay nice and balmy through the weekend and the long range model shows no hint of rain. >> nothing at all. january is the rainiest month of the year, but not this time. >> thanks, paul. >> you may experience some sticker shock at the vending machine in the new year.
